Paraphrase

I will be more specific, you may eat the following: the type of locust well known for coming in huge swarms, the kind of locust known to be the most destructive of them all, that other creature which jumps away at the smallest threat, and the small variety which is either a small locust or a grasshopper, all of which reproduce according to their God-given category as God intended.

Footnotes

1

This word for locust comes from a word meaning “to increase rapidly.” It pictures a swarm suddenly appearing and increasing in size at an alarming rate.

2

Why are the words “in agreement to it kind” mentioned in each case? It seems unnecessary and unrelated to the food laws. God often emphasized this principle of reproduction according to a creature’s God-ordained category called a “kind”. He could insert that emphasis wherever He wanted to, and He did. This also gives them a sense of legitimacy; they are part of God’s creation and move at His command in order to bring judgment on a nation. They are not some fluke of nature, or something outside of God’s control.

3

The “destroyer of the devastator” is similar to the word for rock, indicating that its jaws can crush like a rock.

4

The verb from which this noun comes from means “to leap, to be afraid, to tremble.” It has been rendered in a  variety of ways, meaning we are not absolutely sure which insect it refers to.

5

Of its 5 uses in Scripture, 4 of them are rendered “grasshopper” by most translations, but one reference is rendered “locust” by most translation. Thus it can mean either grasshopper of locust. Its root word is unknown.
