Troublesome Topic: THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE PURE AND THE IMPURE

Lesson 5 of 11

Lev 10:10, Lev 11:47, Lev 20:25, Ezek 44:23 emphasize knowing the difference between clean and unclean things, and being able to clearly distinguish the spiritual status of any created thing.

It seems so basic. Of course there is a difference between something that is pure and something that is not pure. God gave this teaching to the children of Israel because it was important for them to know there was a difference between the pure and the impure. And yet many Christ-followers in our culture today don’t even stop to think about the difference between the pure and the impure. Because they don’t see any importance in understanding the distinction, they regularly cross lines they should not cross.

It seems like a majority of people today live to be entertained; everything is about satisfying self and trying to be happy all the time. Work is seen entirely through negative lenses, responsibilities and “adulting” are also seen as negative because they don’t entertain me. They mix work with pleasure by watching videos on their cellphones all day at work. Many people sleep with their phones and allow themselves to be interrupted many times during the night by texts and other notifications. Our culture is upside down!

The reason I bring this up is this – while we are focused on satisfying self, we are unaware of spiritual dynamics that God has said are important. God said that the concepts of clean and unclean are very important, yet today we pretend God never mentioned them. We have believed the spiritual leaders around us who have told us that we can ignore anything that is from the Old Testament, especially anything from the Law. When we get to the New Covenant, we will see how much of the Former Covenant has been retained; you might be surprised.

Since God is a holy God, He cannot accept the impure

It would be a violation of God’s character for Him to say, “Alright, it’s not a big deal. Don’t worry about that right and wrong stuff.” The Law is full of instances where God said there will be punishment for impurity, for God does not accept impurity. He communicated this teaching using the words “clean” and “unclean.”

The next lesson in all three series on Covenants is DO NOT TOUCH UNCLEAN THINGS
