This word comes from the two words “to stand before;” it was used with such meanings as “rule over, preside over, direct, manage, guide, protect, lead, set the example for.”


This word is hard to put in English in just one word. It has the basic ideas of “weighty and gravity.” It denotes “seriousness, honoring with dignity that which is respectable, giving due reverence to that which is venerable, having a serious and respectful attitude toward that which is the time-honored.”
