Footnotes

1: “master”

This is the Greek word from which we get the English word “despot,” meaning “an uncontested ruler, or a mighty dictator.” It is often translated “Lord,” but it is a different word. “Master” is probably the best way to translate into English today. The emphasis is on his unlimited power, with no weaknesses; he can do whatever he wants to do. In English the word “despot” is usually negative, but that is because of the way the power is used. Power itself is not good or bad, for it can be used for self or for others. In Jesus we see the other kind of “despot,” one who will use his immense power for others.
