Paraphrase

THE COMPLETE WOMAN TO THE COMPLETE MAN

Let me lean on your stick-to-itiveness; please refresh me when I need to be revived,

because you’re the only one for me.

Footnotes

1: “Support”

This word means to brace up, or lean something on something else. Thus it can be translated “support, sustain, lean, brace, uphold.” It also carries the idea of laying hold of something, but that does not fit this context.

2: “Raisin cakes”

Since raisins are dried grapes, raisins are the long-term product of the vine. Since the vine represents prosperity, raisins also represent productivity and prosperity, and add to that the idea of longevity because they were preserved. The word used here specifically means “raisin cakes,” which were used in fertility cults because they were thought to be an aphrodisiac and to promote fertility. In the latter (fertility) we see the former (productiveness) applied specifically to childbearing. Here, the image used has aspects that are physical, and some that are deeper than the physical. Because it is used in conjunction with the need for being propped up, I choose to emphasize longevity.

3

The word means “to spread a bed.” The reader must determine from context the purpose of the action, be it to refresh, to comfort, or to sustain.

4

Apples were seen as something that revived.
